Alrighty, so I decided to make this thread because... well, simple thing, really- I'd done a really in-depth thing on Pokémon typing a few weeks or months back or so.
So, what I was attempting to answer with it is: Are Pokémon types ingrained into their genetic code, or a simple way to organize Pokémon made up by the Professors or even just for the games and the show to make things more entertaining?
So my ideas were originally that, due to a Pokémon's typing, moves would be super effective on some Pokémon as opposed to others. This of course means that those moves dealt more damage than other moves.
In saying that, it must mean that a Pokémon's type was determined via genetics.
However, with the discovery of the Fairy type, this appears to not quite be the case.
Take Snubbul for example. This Pokémon used to be a Normal type, making Fighting type moves super effective. However, since it is now a Fairy type, Fighting type moves are not super effective.
This now means that types must NOT be genetically coded into Pokémon, and thus are simply ways that the franchise uses to make things more interesting.
